It's in the details

This is Sermon on the Mount by Carl Bloch. There is a large copy of it hanging in my church. There is also one in the Columbus Ohio temple. One day while I stood in the temple I stopped and actually took what is probably my first real look at this painting. The detail that suddenly caught my attention is the little boy on the left. I can't quite pinpoint why that little boy matters to me so much. I suspect it is because his actions make the portrayal so much more relate-able to me. I can easily envision my own children being caught up in the beauty of a butterfly no matter what was going on around them.

This is not my favorite piece of art but I do love that little boy. Such innocence.
